If you haven't seen it yet, a brand new 350.org video just hit the internet--it's been spread and shared in every conceivable way online, but we need to make sure it gets out farther so we can make the International Day of Climate Action on October 24, 2009 as big as possible.

As of this writing, the video has been seen 17,497 times. If we can double that number, we'll have about 35,000 views--a nice round number. :)

Dear Friends,
As you all know, the first ever 3 Rivers Bioneers Conference is quickly approaching (Oct 16-18), and the team of volunteers working to secure speakers and workshop leaders is looking for your help and suggestions!

I have attached an request for proposals (RFP). If you have a solution-based workshop that you want to share with the bioregion, we want to hear it! If you have a friend that is doing great work, give them a copy of the RFP, and have them send it in! All ideas will be considered by the Speaker Committee, so please help us spread the word.

The House of Representatives has just passed a landmark bill that will propel our nation toward a clean energy future.

The vote was close. Know that all of your efforts -- whether a signed petition, a donation, or a call -- made a difference in the outcome. Together, we are truly showing the power of government by the people and for the people.

It's not over though. The debate moves on to the Senate where our opponents will redouble their efforts. There will be more distortions and foot dragging, but the momentum is on our side.

News: Thomas Berry Celebration in NYC

Dear Friends of the Farm,
Since Thomas Berry passed away on June 1, there have been many outpourings of condolences and expressions of appreciation for his life and work. There were three memorial services held, one in his native place of Greensboro, NC, one at the Passionist Monastery of his religious order in Jamaica, NY and finally his interment at Green Mountain Monastery in Greensboro, VT.

So many people who have been touched by Thomas’s life have wanted to come together to honor him. Such a gathering has been planned for September 26 at the Cathedral of St John the Divine in New York City. While many of you will not be able to travel to the Cathedral, we hope you will join us in spirit and solidarity with him and each other as we celebrate his extraordinary life.

News: Thomas Berry, Theo-Geologian dies at 94

On Monday, June 1st, Passionist Priest and Earth Scholar Thomas Berry passed away. He was 94 years old and died at the Well-Spring Retirement Community in Greensboro, N.C.

Thomas Berry (1915-2009)

Berry's classic work, The Dream of the Earth, published in 1988, helped awaken people both to the magnitude of our ecological crisis and to its essential spiritual component. Berry stands out as one of the most important prophets of the 20th century. He inspired the writings of many in the eco-spiritual field, including Brian Swimme, Diarmuid O'Murchu, Judy Cannato, Michael Dowd, Connie Barlow, Sr. Miriam MacGillis, and others. Berry will be remembered as an Earth Scholar, Geologian, and Cosmologist.

Berry was greatly influenced by the evolutionary cosmology of French Jesuit priest Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. A Catholic priest himself, Berry will be best remembered for helping the religious traditions to recognize the ecological crisis as a deeply spiritual issue.

The following is an excerpt from his article "The Spirituality of the Earth" (1990):

We need a spirituality that emerges out of a reality deeper than ourselves, even deeper than life, a spirituality that is as deep as the earth process itself, a spirituality born out of the solar system and even out of the heavens beyond the solar system. There in the stars is where the primordial elements take shape in both their physical and psychic aspects. There is a certain triviality in any spiritual discipline that does not experience itself as supported by the spiritual as well as the physical dynamics of the entire cosmic-earth process. A spirituality is a mode of being in which not only the divine and the human commune with each other, but we discover ourselves in the universe and the universe discovers itself in us.

Reaffirming Julia Ward Howe's Mother's Day Vision

Contributor writes "Julia Ward Howe offered her Mother's Day Proclamation to the world in 1870. Her dream was the establishment of an international Mothers' Day Festival dedicated to the cause of nonviolent resolution of conflict and international solidarity among all women. Her pacifist consciousness had been provoked by the bloodshed of the Franco-Prussian War. Her activism was cultivated in the struggles for abolition of slavery and the quest for women's suffrage. She had the proclamation translated into French, Spanish, Italian, German, and Swedish, working for the establishment of Mother's Day in concert with women internationally celebrating peace and women's empowerment.

Howe died in 1910, four years before President Woodrow Wilson officially declared the day in 1914 in response to the burgeoning success of the movement she inspired. But Wilson avoided any mention of the thrust of Howe's cause in his declaration, instead emphasizing only the nurturing "home and hearth" dimension of motherhood. He also spurned the internationalist concern that was central to Howe's consciousness, distorting this into American nationalism. Howe's central concerns, the universality of motherhood and its natural expression in anti-war sentiment, was excised from the official meaning of the day.

President Wilson proclaimed: "Now, therefore, I, Woodrow Wilson, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the said Joint Resolution, do hereby direct the government officials to display the United States flag on all government buildings and do invite the people of the United States to display the flag at their homes or other suitable places on the second Sunday in May as a public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country."

Compare this to Howe's far more high minded vision, still so desperately needed in this suffering divided world peace...."

'Ready to add Fresh Air Tai Ji to your Walk?

I have been so happy to see signs of Spring on my various walks these past few weeks. When I saw that the 'Burgh made it in the top ten cities nationally I started reflecting on what my top three favorite walks are. I've recently fallen in love with Washington's Landing -- where I've been exploring my Tai Ji and Qi Gong practice along with the walk.

I have to say The Highland Park resevoir remains a fav and for #3 , I'd include Phipps Conservatory -- which is a breath of vitality during wintertime. I wonder what walks are in your top three???

Perhaps you'll join me in one of the special park settings I'm now beginning the Fresh Air Tai Ji season with. Please give me a call to indicate your interest and get further information.

Drop-ins are welcome -- as long as you call ahead the morning of class ($15)
A package of four classes are discounted to $50 and can be used interchangeably through August...
